Science Foundation Grant for Relationships between Artificial Intelligence Machines
Jin Tian, assistant professor of computer science at Iowa State University was chosen for the Faculty Early Career Awards by the National Science Foundation in the amount of $455,000 over the next five years. Tian's proposal focuses on causal reasoning, the analysis of cause-and-effect communication relationships between artificial intelligence machines. Causal Bayesian networks will be used to represent and reason about causal relationships and to address topics such as axiomatizing causal reasoning, model testing, identifying causal effects, and causal reasoning in structural equation models. Theoretical foundations and mathematical models will be developed to explore if artificial intelligence machines can act like humans. The research will have applications in social and health science fields to analyze cause-and-effect relationships, such as what medical treatments are the most effective in terms of curing disease. www.cs.iastate.edu/people/ facultyview.jsp?fname=Jin

Artificially Intelligent Nursing
The University of Michigan's Artificial Intelligence Lab is developing software called Autominder to power computerized

caregivers, a future nurses' aide, to help the elderly or those who have suffered brain trauma to perform tasks and navigate their surroundings. The software is based on intelligent cognitive orthotics and would supplement human caregivers. The software has been used in small hand-held computers and in a mobile robot called Pearl, or Nursebot. The patient operates the device by touching or tapping it when a task for which the reminder is brought up is completed. The goal is to include motion and contact sensors to also warn people if water is left running or a door is left open. Autominder uses artificial intelligence technology specific to each user to send out personalized reminders
